Sharing GIFs with 350M People

At Tenor, I owned several products and features directed at network-positive OKRs, user growth/engagement, and operational effectiveness that helped grow Tenor to over 350M MAUs and over 12B monthly searches of our content.

In March of 2018, Google acquired Tenor to grow their visual search products.

Read on for overviews of 5 Products/Features I owned in an end-to-end capacity.

Grew branded partner page support to thousands of partners

Problem: Adding a caption to GIFs was a popular user feature but the flow had a worrisome bounce rate

Significance: Empowering users to personalize GIFs is central to Tenor’s mission of helping people accurately express themselves

Solution: Re-design the Caption experience to enable better personalization and improve completion rates

Lots of attention paid to logical and efficient interaction design

Closed completion rates and increased repeat actions

Keyboard Packs

Problem

Partners content libraries were becoming too large for scrolling and needed better filtering

Significance

Getting users to right GIF quickly is what drives Sharing on Tenor, while Shares of Partner Content is what drives monetization at Tenor

Solution

Design an in-keyboard navigation system for filtering content

Important to design within the brand’s current style and heuristics

Upload and Tagging Flow

⚠️  Problem

Users couldn’t upload more than 1 GIF at a time and apply distinct Tags for each GIF.

💎  Significance

Tags are the primary operator used by Tenor's Search system, arguably the most valuable user feature.

🚀  Solution

Design an Upload flow that empowers users to intuitively apply appropriate Tags for each GIF.

Process

  • Conceptual Designs
  • Functional Spec

  • Stakeholder Reviews
  • Design Iterations
  • Team Consensus
  • Design > Dev Handoffs

Highlights

Efficient functions coupled with appropriate interactions.

Apply a Tag to all objects with a subtle [Add to All] function nestled in tag and suggestion fields.
